Named after the Greek goddess of memory, Mnemosyne Vol. I marks the beginning of an ongoing exploration into movement as something both physical and enduring—held not only in the body, but in the spaces it leaves behind.
Developed from a concept revisited over many years, this work considers movement memory: the way gesture, rhythm, and connection persist beyond their immediate expression, whereby the figures exist between states. Together, they occupy a threshold where presence and recollection converge.
The surface reflects this tension. Painted over several weeks, layers were built and softened, allowing forms to shift rather than settle. Edges blur, light emerges, and the composition resists a single fixed moment, echoing the nature of memory itself.
While rooted in the language of ballet, this work extends beyond performance. It speaks to the imprint of movement more broadly; the residual energy carried through the body, whether in dance, sport, or lived experience.
As the first in a planned series, Mnemosyne Vol. I establishes a visual and conceptual foundation for examining how movement is remembered, reinterpreted, and ultimately transformed over time.
